It's vindicating to hear that Chris didn't like TFA. I'm not great at articulating the overarching narrative issues of movies I don't like, so Chris's point about the trio not having a moment together -- *especially when TFA clearly tried to be fan services* -- is a perfectly succinct way of spelling out the issue. They didn't care to tell a meaningful story. Which was immediately obvious to me in the opening sequence, first with introducing and immediately killing off Max Von Sydow's character, which lacked any impact, and then interrupting the exchange between Kylo and Poe with comedic relief that's far too early and inappropriate ("So, who talks first? You talk first? I talk first?"). I may be a rare fan in this regard, but as soon as we get that line from Poe, I just immediately felt it was going to be a shit movie. I gauged all of my friends and family who watched it and they loved it, and I just couldn't understand why. I think I understand now that as big of fans as they may be, there is a deeper level of narrative and aesthetic meaning in the OT that I (and others like me) connect with in my mind's eye, but that is absent in The Force Awakens and subsequently that trilogy. So, for us, the Disney movies fall far short, but for lots of other fans who connect with the surface details and don't ever seem to go that deep toward a silent inward connection with that ineffable something Star Wars has that alights my mind and heart, Disney is giving them what they want.
